Fire TV App

Broadcast Atlas for Fire TV

The app you install here is the Broadcast Atlas Couch Potato Edition, our free TV app. It puts the whole catalog on your TV, driven by your remote, including channels only the TV app can play. It isn't in the Amazon Appstore, so you install it with the free Downloader app. It takes about five minutes. The app is built for Android TV and should run on Fire TV models that run Fire OS; we haven't tested it on a Fire TV ourselves yet.

  1. 1. Check your Fire TV can install apps

Most Fire TVs run Fire OS, which can install the app. Some of the newest sticks run Amazon's Vega OS instead, which can't install any outside apps (Downloader isn't available on them either).

    These won't work:

    • Fire TV Stick HD (2nd generation) (the newer HD stick, with Wi-Fi 6)
    • Fire TV Stick 4K Select
    • Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd generation) (no Plus or Max in the name, and a small “4K” printed by the HDMI plug)
    • Older Fire TVs whose About screen says Fire OS 5 (most 2014–2017 models): the app needs Fire OS 6 or newer.

These should work: Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Fire TV Stick 4K Plus, Fire TV Cube, the 1st-generation Fire TV Stick HD (2024), and other Fire OS models with Lite, Plus, Max or Cube in the name.

Not sure which you have? On your Fire TV, open Settings > My Fire TV > About (on a TV with Fire TV built in: Settings > Device & Software > About). The model name is at the top. Also check Software Version in the lower right of that screen: if it says Fire OS (for example Fire OS 7 or 8), the app should work; if it says just OS and a number starting with 1, it is a Vega OS device and can't install the app. If Downloader doesn't show up in step 2, your model can't install apps.

  2. 2. Install Downloader

On your Fire TV, search for Downloader (the orange icon, by AFTVnews) and install it from the Amazon Appstore. It's free.

  3. 3. Let Downloader install apps

Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Developer Options, choose Install unknown apps, and turn it on for Downloader. (On some older models the switch is called Apps from Unknown Sources.)

No Developer Options? Go to Settings > My Fire TV > About, select your device name and press the select button on your remote 7 times. Developer Options then appears under My Fire TV.

  4. 4. Download the app

Open Downloader, select the address box and type broadcastatlas.com/fire, then select Go. Downloader fetches the latest version of the app (version 1.0.13).

  5. 5. Install and open it

Select Install when Fire TV asks, then Open. Next time, you'll find Broadcast Atlas Couch Potato under Your Apps on the home screen. Downloader can then delete the download file to save space; the app stays installed.

Sign in on the TV (optional)

You can watch without an account. To bring your favorites and votes, press right on the remote in the channel list: the app shows a 6-digit code. Then on your phone or computer, sign in and go to broadcastatlas.com/link and enter the code. The TV signs itself in.

Need a Fire TV?

These run Fire OS, so they can install the app:

  • Fire TV Stick 4K MaxRuns Fire OS, so it can install the app. Amazon's top stick, so it should run the app smoothly.
  • Fire TV Stick 4K PlusRuns Fire OS, so it can install the app. It should run it fine.
  • Fire TV CubeRuns Fire OS, so it can install the app. A box rather than a stick, with Ethernet built in.
  • Fire TV Stick HD (1st generation, 2024)Runs Fire OS and should run the app. Check the listing says 1st generation: the newer 2nd-generation Stick HD can't install apps.

Avoid for this app: Fire TV Stick HD (2nd generation), Fire TV Stick 4K Select, Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd generation). They run Vega OS and can't install it.
